COASTAL EROSION
Started: October 2015

Status: Completed December 2015

Location: Baylys Beach, Dargaville,
Northland, New Zealand

LATITUDE: -35.950341

LONGITUDE: 173.741712

KEY OBJECTIVES

  • Protect sand dunes from damage

  • Repair and stabilise eroded dunes

  • Encourage natural vegetation growth

  • Reinforce the Seaview Road beach access

  • Minimise coastal erosion

The Challenge

Restoring and protecting the sand dunes at Baylys Beach is no easy task, with the powerful west coast seas relentlessly battering the shoreline.

The harsh conditions have led to significant coastal erosion, leaving the dunes and the Seaview Road beach entrance vulnerable to constant damage.

The Solution

In collaboration with Northland Regional Council, Transfield Services, and local community groups, a plan was developed to restore and protect the main Baylys Beach entrance via Seaview Road.

A sand dune stabilisation system was installed to repair erosion, reduce further coastal damage, and encourage natural vegetation growth.

The project has proven highly successful, with the dunes holding firm and new native vegetation steadily regenerating along the coastline.
